Invisalign® Q&A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses clear BPA-free plastic aligners instead of metal brackets and wires to correct the alignment of your teeth. You may prefer Invisalign to traditional braces because the aligners are nearly invisible while being worn so you don’t have put up with a smile full of metal throughout your treatment. Additionally, the aligners are made of smooth plastic, so the inside of your mouth won’t be irritated. You can also take the aligners out to eat and to clean your teeth.

What happens during Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign treatment begins with a comprehensive exam during which Dr. Griggs will determine the extent of your dental alignment issue. He’ll take casts and pictures of your teeth, which will be used to map out your treatment. Your aligners are custom made to guide your teeth through a series of horizontal and vertical movements into the correct position.

You’ll wear each pair of aligners for two weeks. In the beginning of your treatment, you’ll see Dr. Griggs every two weeks to change your aligners, but once your treatment is underway, you will have appointments every four to six weeks for Dr. Griggs to check on your progress and change the aligners on your own at home.

You’ll be able to take your aligners out to eat and brush and floss your teeth. It is important to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours every day.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Each patient has a unique experience but on average, Invisalign treatment takes between 9-24 months. Dr. Griggs will provide you with the specific details about your treatment after your initial consultation.

How should I take care of my teeth while I have Invisalign treatment?

One of the many benefits of Invisalign treatment is that you can remove your aligners for short periods of time. This means that you can brush and floss your teeth as normal, throughout treatment. You’ll also have regular appointments with Dr. Griggs to check the health of your teeth as well as the progress of your treatment.
